Why give a doodle

Most people think math and art are siloed professions. But this scene from Spongebob alludes to something to the contrary. That is, they mesh very well together.

Math feeds well into tech. And my interest lies in using tech for social good. At Columbia's AI for Vision Science lab I build computer vision tools that help low-vision users, and support systems that help clinicians catch glaucoma and eye cancer earlier. Before that, I taught models to read mosquito feeding signals for the USDA, work published in Scientific Reports as the first machine learning approach to waveforms from blood-feeding insects, the kind that spread disease (like Zika, malaria, dengue, etc.). I've also done quantitative research at trading firms, which is where the math turns into finance.

My art side is reflected in this site. For 10 years, I've been painting and sharing my art with the world through Instagram. I thought, why not create a dedicated space for it?

Fun fact: I won a math art competition twice, which is the most on-brand award I'll ever hold.

The work

The latest from the sketchbook, pulled straight from Instagram. Tap any piece to open the full post.

Catch the sparkle

The cursor squiggle wanted a proper job, so I gave it one. Chase the sparkle around the box and it will keep running away. Ten catches earns you something.

sparkles: 0/10
move your cursor (or finger) inside the box

Ten sparkles. You've got taste.

Since chasing my doodles is apparently your thing, you can have a real one show up in your mailbox every month. New design each time, gone when the month ends.

Grew up drawing in the margins

Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Math olympiad medals, national debate titles, and notebooks full of doodles that were definitely lecture notes.

Started posting the doodles to Instagram. The account has been the sketchbook's public window ever since, a decade of pieces and counting.

2021 · Claremont, CA

Graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors; wrote theses in both. President of the 5Cs Art Council, serving public art to all 7Cs. Won the CMC Math Art Competition two years running and the Harvey Mudd CS department design prize. Co-founded the Claremont Accelerator, which raised over $2.6M for student startups.

2024 · USDA

Machine learning for the bugs

Automated the labelling of mosquito feeding waveforms with ML, published in Scientific Reports with USDA and NSF backing. Tiny electrical signals, real consequences for fighting mosquito-borne disease.

2025 · APAC markets

Quant research

Systematic equity research and alpha signals at Graviton Research Capital, trading data pipelines at Chicago Global. This is where the math earned its keep.

2025 to 2027 · New York

Masters at Columbia, twice over

First in Computer Science (with a machine learning focus), now in Financial Engineering. Research assistant at the AI for Vision Science lab, building assistive tools for low-vision users and diagnostic support for eye clinicians. Also TA for the Innovation and Design Lab, teaching the design thinking methodology with Professor Zamchick.
